What is the best way to clean my terrazzo floor?

Scrub using a 16" to 20" diameter brush on a scrubbing machine. To assist in gripping a 3M-type screen mesh pad, place a soft-type pad on the brush. It should be noted that these mesh pads should only be used twice or three times a year.

The roughness of the screen mesh pad can be one of #60, #80, or #100. (The grit is coarser if the number is lower.) Scrub the floor surface using a neutral cleaner and water as a lubricant. After numerous passes in different directions, you should be able to see that all foreign matter has been removed from the surface. The quantity of foot traffic should be used to control the cleaning cycle schedule. As the terrazzo floor ages, the maintenance requirements are lessened.

2. What should I do to maintain my terrazzo floor?

The application of a pure surface coating (as most floor waxes are) is unnecessary and usually NOT advised. The use of a surface coating or wax may reduce the non-slip coefficient of friction below the standard grade of 0.5. Marble chips and aggregates, which account for 70% of the terrazzo floor, have very low porosity and do not absorb most staining chemicals.

The binder, particularly Portland cement, which is porous and absorbs stains, is the part of the terrazzo that requires protection. Terrazzo does not require wear protection; rather, it requires absorption protection, which is done by using a penetrating sealer that shuts off the pores in the binder.
