TRAVERTINE - a warm and textured antique stone
1. Formation.
It is a limestone, also known as tuff or travertine. As a terrestrial sedimentary rock, it is a deposit of calcium carbonate. Pores sometimes appear during the deposition process, and the main component of itself is calcium carbonate, which is easily eroded by water dissolution, so many natural irregular pores appear in these accumulations.
2. Difference with marble.
When limestone is pressed for a thousand years (heavy accumulation), travertine is formed, and if travertine continues to be pressed for another thousand years (continued heavy accumulation), marble will be formed. Travertine is the transition between limestone and marble, with an appearance finer than limestone and rougher than marble. Likewise, it is a somewhat cheaper material than marble.
3. Appearance.
There are many natural irregular holes, mostly beige in color, and there are white travertine and yellow travertine (also green, purple, pink, curry).
Travertine is a sedimentary rock, there will be some differences in the appearance of the texture in the cross-section and longitudinal section. The cross-sectional texture is more uniform, while the longitudinal section can see layers and layers of rock accumulation
4. Place of origin (high quality of stone for building)
Italy, Iran, and Turkey
5. Domestic travertine quarries.
Henan, domestic white hole stone, yellow hole stone
6. History.
Travertine has been used by mankind for a long time, the classic symbolic building materials in Roman times, such as Colosseum, the cathedral at Pisa; ancient western use of travertine in large quantities, until the introduction of concrete. Because of its material properties and historical symbolism, travertine is also a favorite of many modern architects, such as Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (Barcelona Pavilion), Louis Kahn (Salk Institute), I.M. Pei (Eastwing of National Gallery). I.M.Pei's design of the Bank of China headquarters (Xidan, Beijing) in 1998 applied a large area of travertine, introducing the system of mature travertine construction standards into China for the first time.
7. Material characteristics of travertine.
-Travertine is uniform, soft and hard, easy to mine and process, light in specific gravity (density), easy to transport
-Travertine has fine texture, high processing adaptability, low hardness, is easy to carve, suitable for carving, and shaped materials
-Travertine has good acoustic and thermal insulation properties due to its void structure
-Travertine has low hardness, low density, high water absorption rate, not suitable for installation in a wet environment, excessive water absorption will lead to cracking and discoloration
