Travertine is named after the many holes in the surface of the stone, whose scientific name is tuff or travertine and which, commercially, is classified as marble. The stone has been used by mankind for a long time and the most representative building of Roman culture, the Colosseum, is the original masterpiece of travertine.

The tone of travertine is predominantly beige and makes for a gentle, richly textured, and clearly striped look, prompting the decoration of buildings that often have a strong cultural and historical flavor and are used in many buildings around the world. I.M. Pei Architects designed the interior and exterior of the Bank of China building at the Xidan junction in Beijing and chose Italian Roman travertine, which was used for a total of 20,000m2. Why not call it marble? Because its texture and appearance is so different from that of marble in the traditional sense that the decorative world simply agreed on it. Its formation is generally considered to be a calcareous material precipitated under atmospheric conditions from carbonate-bearing springs (usually hot springs). It is specifically formed when circulating groundwater containing carbon dioxide carries away large amounts of calcareous carbonate from the solution, and when the groundwater reaches the surface of the spring, some of the carbon dioxides is released and coalesces in the sedimentary layers of calcareous carbonate, forming the rare bubbles (pores) that give rise to travertine. Unlike limestone deposits in the sea, tuff is mostly deposited rapidly in rivers or lakes, and ponds. This rapid deposition prevents the release of organic matter and gases, resulting in a beautiful texture, but the disadvantage is that it also produces delamination of internal fissures, weakening it in the same direction as the texture. Because of its pores, tuff is not very dense per unit and is suitable as a covering material rather than as a structural, foundation material for buildings. Travertine was once used in large quantities as a foundation and structural material for buildings, but with concrete, it was not used as much. Apart from yellow, travertine is also available in green, white, purple, pink, coffee, and many other colors. Travertine has also been found and produced in Henan Province, China.

Travertine is mainly used in exterior building decoration and interior floor and wall decoration.
